Z. J. Loussac Public Library Closure

Z. J. Loussac Public Library Closure

Scheduled for September 30th through October 7th

Excitement builds as ongoing renovation reveals beautiful, fluid, and functional structural updates

Anchorage, Alaska August 21, 2015 – The Loussac Library will be closed for one week during construction of a temporary public entrance. Circulation Services will also move to a temporary location on the first floor. Materials may be returned to the outdoor book drops during the closure.

All branch locations will remain open during their usual scheduled hours.

James (Jim) Przeczewski, Project Manager for the Municipality of Anchorage, explained Tuesday, August 18, 2015, during a tour of the construction site that closing was necessary to implement the temporary entrance and move library staff and equipment to the first floor; which will be permanent when the project is complete.

The contractor, Pinnacle Construction, will begin removing the exterior stairs and upper deck leading into the current second floor entry. The dramatic change will bring natural daylight through a glass entry that reaches beyond the first and second floors. The second floor will have a living-room-like style where patrons can enjoy light and a panoramic view of Cuddy Family Midtown Park and a panoramic view of the outdoors.

This multi-phase project enhances Z.J. Loussac Library with new spaces outside and with new interior improvements provides additional space for library operations. This project provides a new drive-up book drop which protects library materials from the elements and reduces hazards to library employees. Currently a rolling cart is used to retrieve materials from exterior bins.

Just like a conduit or portal, the final library structure will be more accessible, beautiful and fluid. Through value engineering, the Municipality has made a conscious effort to exercise and seek out optimum value in this construction project. The scheduled opening of the Entry and Upgrades is set for November 2016.
