Town Square Park is an important park and civic space located in the heart of downtown Anchorage. More than a park, Town Square Park provides an economic anchor and is a catalyst and enhancement for the development of Downtown Anchorage’s commerce and cultural exchange. Town Square Park was first developed in the 1980’s to provide an oasis from urban activities in Alaska’s largest and most metropolitan city. The Park has undergone several changes since it was first developed and use of the park has evolved over the years. Recently, the inoperative water fountain in the center of Town Square Park was removed in an effort to improve visibility and public safety in the park.
Since 1997, Anchorage Downtown Partnership has facilitated programming in the park with partnership with Anchorage Parks & Recreation. Guided by a vision to create a welcoming, clean, safe and vibrant environment, we program multiple concert series daily throughout the summer and additional family-friendly during some of our annual summer events. Our safety and maintenance ambassadors facilitate a safe environment daily keeping their eyes and ears out for suspicious behavior or an unclean environment.
Anchorage Downtown Placemaking
Anchorage Downtown Placemaking works to bring positive energy and use to downtown’s parks and public spaces. The program facilitates collaborative use of these spaces through inspiration, coordination and reducing existing barriers to entry.
Together with partnering organizations, Anchorage Downtown Placemaking allows space activation programming to more easily fill the downtown parks: Town Square, Peratrovich and the 5th Ave Rooftop Park, as well as other empty public spaces in downtown: alleyways, vacant store fronts, street corners, etc. You provide the programming, idea or event, we help take care of equipment and logistical needs, as well as offer our expertise in navigating permit requirements, promotion and marketing at an additional cost.
