Block 41 Beautification Project
The Block 41 Beautification Project is a temporary public art installation along the construction fencing surrounding the Block 41 redevelopment site at 4th Avenue and G Street in downtown Anchorage. As construction progresses, the fencing will serve as a canvas for local artists, transforming an otherwise utilitarian barrier into a vibrant outdoor gallery for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The Installation
The project will ultimately feature 23 large-format panels, installed along the fence line. The first wave includes 12 artist panels showcasing works by local artists whose pieces are also represented in nearby downtown galleries.
Each panel measures 5 by 8 feet, creating an accessible streetside gallery experience in the heart of downtown.
In addition to the artist panels, an informational panel will describe the project and recognize the partners who made the installation possible.
Beyond the Beige Grant Project
The installation is part of Beyond the Beige, a community initiative supporting creative projects that activate public spaces.
The Block 41 installation was spearheaded by downtown business owners Ivy Spohnholz of Cabin Fever Fabric, Fiber & Gifts and Laurette Rose of Tiny Gallery. Working alongside project partners, the team is transforming the construction fencing into a rotating outdoor mural gallery featuring up to 40 original works over time.
As panels rotate, artworks may be gifted or auctioned throughout the community, extending the reach of the project beyond the construction site.
First wave of mural panels
The Beautification Project will feature 23 panels when completed. The first wave of 12 panels features artworks by the following artists whose works are sold at the 4th and G Street area galleries.
