Anchorage Cares Initiative

An all-volunteer group dedicated to issues of community safety has introduced the Anchorage Cares program, aimed at reducing panhandling on Anchorage streets. Through Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd, the Anchorage Economic Development Corp.’s Live. Work. Play. initiative, the Municipality of Anchorage, and Anchorage Community Development Authority, the program encourages Anchorage residents to resist the urge of handing money to panhandlers and instead donate directly to homeless service organizations.

Foster A Flower

Each summer, Anchorage blooms into the “City of Flowers” program. Our municipal greenhouse grows over 76,000 plants and 1400 hanging baskets. As an admirer of flowers, residents or businesses can help maintain this program by “fostering” two hanging baskets.

Led by former mayors Tony Knowles & Rick Mystrom, the Downtown Advisory Group (DAG) was a voluntary coalition of downtown businesses, property owners, organizations, and other stakeholders who came together to collaboratively identify challenges and opportunities facing the community and to identify recommendations on how to address these challenges for the incoming Berkowitz administration.

Summer Greeter Program

In 2005, downtown business owners expressed concerns to Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. about the availability of tour bus loading & unloading locations within downtown. To address their concerns — concerns shared by tour company operators as well — ADP worked with the Municipality and Anchorage Community Development Authority to create additional tour bus loading & unloading locations along 4th Avenue where visitors could get off the motorcoaches to spend 2-4 hours in downtown Anchorage.

Imagine hearing stories about different downtown landmarks from past and current leaders of our city! 4th Avenue Theatre mural project

The 4th Avenue Theatre is the iconic downtown building, located in the heart of historic 4th Avenue. The Theatre currently lacks a tenant and fell victim to vandalism over the past winter. In order to help put a brighter face on this icon of downtown until a new tenant can be found for the building, Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. worked with local photographers and the University of Alaska to compile historic photos of the Theatre and 4th Avenue that could be blown up into larger than life murals covering the previously boarded-up doors and windows.
